Project 5: Final

Here is the link to the blog for project 5.

I really enjoyed this project because of what I learned through doing it. I learned a lot about places that my friends and family have lived or are living in. I believe this project gave them an outlet to express what they really find special and note-worthy about the cities and towns they live in.
I asked various friends and families to take at least 5 pictures from around the town they live in or find pictures from places they had lived in. I asked that they give a brief description of the area and a few lines describing each picture and why it is important to them or the area. The towns were mapped on Google maps, so anyone who may be interested in visiting those places would have a guide to follow.
I found the mix of places that I recieved very interesting. The places range from historical, to food venues, and outdoor landmarks. It is always interesting to find out about places that you may not find on a map. The places have gone from reality to a mixed- reality tour.
My inspiration for the project was from the class example webpage murmur. I wish I had more technology at my disposal like the makers of murmur did but I like the simplicity of the blog and the personal touches that are felt with each town.
All of the pictures were taken by the people from those towns with the exception of three of the St. Augustine pictures: the Bridge of Lions, Benito's Pizza, and the Pier at Vilano Beach. The participant could not locate photos at this time but wanted those places to be included. The pictures were taken from google images.
Of all the projects we have done this was one of my favorites. I think it showed how much people find beauty and pleasure in the towns they live in. I like the mixture of history and everyday life that are, to one person, equally as important.

Project 5 ideas/feelings

For project 5 I am doing a blog that is similar to the murmur webpage we reviewed in class. I have asked my friends to take 5 pictures of places in their hometown or the city they currently live in. These places can be historical or just special to that person. I asked them to give a brief description of what is important about that place so that others who may be interested in visiting that city may want to check that spot out. On the blog I have included the 5 pictures, the descriptions and a google map that has the locations place marked. I plan on adding a description of each individual location and where that location is in each state.

project 5 ideas

I would like to do one of two things. Either my own small version of "Learning to Love you more" or a type of blog similar to murmur where I would have a few friends that live in different cities take pictures of say 5 places they consider note worthy about their town and give a brief reason why. I think I will see which one I would be more likely to get my friends to respond to and then go from their with the project.

Blogging class response

Before this class I had not really done much with blogs. I have learned though,through our readings, things we have viewed, and assignments that blogs are an important part of our modern multimedia world. Blogs can be considered a world of their own because they are all connected together by the internet. They share a common theme, where people can post about any topic. Blogs are important because they give people an outlet for their thoughts, feelings, and ideas where they may not have a place to let them out otherwise. Blogs are the future of interaction and writing with the changes of our lives around how important the internet has become.

ideas for project 5

Right now this project seems overwhelming just trying to decide what would make for a good mixed-reality and the small amount of time there is to execute it. I like the Pac Manhattan idea and Id love to do it in Morgantown. I have also thought about doing a learning to love you more concept and get people to participate in some such activities as that. would a board game that is re-enacted in real life count as a mixed reality if the board game is not an online or video game?

Metatext for Project Four

I was pretty excited about this project because of the collaboration of other people and their ideas. Multimedia is not just for one person it is for everyone and I was glad that I go to share my project with others. I chose to do my project based on the idea I had of whether we are judged solely by the clothes that we wear. If we choose to wear expensive name brands and labels does that give people an impression about who we are? If someone is wearing a pair of hiking boots and a mountainhardwear jacket does that mean that they are an outdoor enthusiast?

I posted a note on my Facebook page asking all of my friends to take pictures of themselves from the neck down and email the pictures to me with a list of the brand names of whatever items they are wearing. As I recieved the emails I posted them to the blog I made for the project titled You Are What You Wear?. I asked everyone who had participated to go to the blog and write a few sentences about what they think a day for that person would entail. I did get some responses that fit what I asked but i also got personality assumptions aw well and that was fine too. I liked the randomness of the responses and how they differed from the peoples real personalities and sometimes hit the nail on the head. The project gave people a chance to say things about others that they would not want to say in person or out loud. If they did recognize the person they were commenting on it gave them a chance to say what they always may have thought but not said.

All and all I was pleased with the participation I recieved. I would have liked to have seen more people make comment but I may still recieve comments even after the project is finished. Here is the link to my project blog.

project 4 so far

I have created a blog and the link is posted below. The blog is called You Are What You Wear? and I am having people take pictures of themselves and sending them to me and then I post the pictures to the blog and the people can come to the blog and comment on the pictures. The pictures are from the neck down so no ones identities are compromised. I have asked them to write a few lines about what they think a typical day for that person would be like judging solely on their clothes. I ask them to be as serious or as silly as they want. If anyone from class would like to participate my email is mvassar2@mix and i will post your pic and you can comment on the other pictures from the blog which is linked below.

Thoughts on Project 4

For project four I am going to post a note on Facebook and ask my friends to take photos of either their outfit on them or their outfit laid out before they get dressed. Including their shoes, jewelry, hat, anything they are wearing that day and to tell me what the brand is for each piece article. I will have them email me their photos and then I will upload the pictures to my blog and ask each person to comment on all the the photos and say what they believe that outfit would say about that person. I am going to ask each individual what they think their own outfit says about them, they can be as serious and as funny as they would like to be.
I am going to make sure that no one knows what outfits belong to who, that way people can be as truthful and impartial as they want. My goal with this project is to get as many of my friends as I can to relieve whether or not they judge a book by it's cover, or if they themselves are a slave to the trends. I plan of posting each persons clothes pictures into separate posts on a blog that I will make for the project. Then all of the people who participate can comment on each post without knowing who that person is and they can comment without giving up their names. A possible names for the Blog may be Do you judge a book by it's cover or You are what you wear.

I may give example categories for the people to use as a way to describe the outfits they see. Such as Outdoorsy, Trendy, Business, Comfort, and so forth.

initial ideas for project 4

Right now I have quite a few ideas for what I might want to do , but one thing I know for sure is that I would like to use facebook to get my friends involved in the project whether it be a story to fill in, a list of things they can add to, or a project similar to the learning to love you more web page. I like the idea of involving everys ideas and feelings to create the project because that is what the internet itself is is a collaboration of many people and their ideas.

Metatext for Project 3

The freedom and simplicity that this project had was a bit intimidating at first. With so many tools and so many possibilities it was difficult to narrow down 3 pieces. The 3 texts that I chose were for their unique properties that I knew would produce interesting and humorous outcomes. The Verb+7 text which is an excerpt from a short story I wrote called Life On Sticks. The voice that the story had naturally, somewhat sarcastic about a serious injury, I knew would come through in the changed piece. I chose to do verbs instead of nouns because I knew that the verbs would not change to story itself but instead add a new dimension and some humor. I did not change the was and were's because I felt that they did change the story too much from what I wanted it to be.
The Hunter S. Thompson piece is three seperate sections taken from his "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas". I chose to shannonize his work in his own voice because I wanted to see how much of a change this voice would recieve through his voice. In class we had been using text that was far from the voice we were placing them in and I wanted to see how the process would change a similar text.It definately changed the text and order just as much as any other text I had shannonized in his voice. I like the mix of severity, darkness, and humor that is produced.
James Still's "River of Earth" excerpt , that I ran through Babel fish, I chose because I wanted to use a piece of literature that was written in broken english and see how the dialect would come through in translations.I translated it from English to German to French to Dutch to English to Russian and back to English. The finished piece is not what I was expecting but I was pleased with the outcome. The placement of "Of" inbetween all most ever word makes the text choppy and hard to follow. I analyzed the text by taking out the Of's while reading it and the original text itself had not differed that greatly. The translation actually turns the piece into a code that must be broken to reveal the true story.
I enjoyed this project, and I think that more writing should be processed this way, because when you break down any text you find the real writing underneath.

No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.

We finally got into the suite around dusk, and my attorney was immediately on the phone to room service- ordering four club sandwiches, four shrimp cocktails, a quart of rum and nine fresh grapefruits. “Vitamin C,” he explained. “We’ll need all we can get.” I agreed. By this time the drink was beginning to cut the acid and my hallucinations were down to a tolerable level. The room service waiter had a vaguely reptilian cast to his features, but I was no longer seeing huge pterodactyls lumbering around the corridors in pools of fresh blood. And it was hard to explain; in those circles, that everything they told me went into the wastebasket or at least the dead-end file because the lead paragraphs I wrote for that article didn’t satisfy some editor three thousand miles away- some nervous drone behind a grey formica desk in the bowels of a journalistic bureaucracy that no con in Nevada will ever understand- and that the article finally died on the vine, as it were, because I refused to rewrite the lead. For reasons of my own…
None of which would make much sense in The Yard. But what the hell? Why worry about details? I turned to face my accuser, a small young clerk with a big smile on his face and a yellow envelope in his hand. “I’ve been calling your room,” he said. “Then I saw you standing outside.” I nodded, too tired to resist. By now the Shark was beside me, but I saw no point in even tossing my bag into it. The game was up. They had me. The clerk was still smiling. “This telegram just came for you,” he said. “But actually it isn’t for you. It’s for somebody named Thompson, but it says ‘care of Raoul Duke’; does that make sense?” I felt dizzy. It was too much to absorb all at once. From freedom, to prison, and then back to freedom again-all in thirty seconds. I staggered backwards and leaned on the car, feeling the white folds of the canvas top beneath my trembling hand. The clerk, still smiling, was poking the telegram at me. I nodded, barely able to speak. “Yes,” I said finally, “it makes sense.” I accepted the envelope and tore it open.

I loitered vicariously through the television. Wearing Sportscenter, college basketball, and the Steelers. With my leg prorated up on the ottoman, I wore. I fine-tuned if I could not do anything at least I could wear other people being active. Thirty-five degrees was as far as I could be-seem my knee. When I would be-seem my knee, the brace would cavort it before I could graduate too far. The brace was black foam, because it graduates with everything. Crashed in black plastic with shiny metal dials on either side of my knee with six Velcro straps. Those were where the doctor adored my movement. How far I could be-seem my knee was not the only limitations I had. I was not supposed to drown; I needed to kneel my leg eluded as often as I could. None of these limitations meshed well with my ADD. I could never stew in one place for very long; I needed to be moving or at least entranced. If I was a fox and my brace was a trap, I may have governed my leg off.

The delicate skin under my arms was finally being traipsing up. My upper body was garbling the muscles that my leg was lucubrating. I did not throb it was possible for my chicken leg to lube any scrawnier but I was wrong. The muscle tone sent to fascinate away before my eyes. Atrophy was the medical term for it. My other leg, that was doing all the work, was bulking up and I woven if they would ever lube the same again. Well they do not, not really, at least not to me. A leg model I will never be.
It was not the senior year I had plodded for, but I still handled fun. You would be sustained the liberties that are back-dated you when you are unable to muffle around very fast. I granulated to leave school early in order to make it to physical therapy on time. If I was late for class, the teacher undulate. I fine-tuned if I could not do anything at least I could wear other people being active. Thirty-five degrees was as far as I could be-seem my knee. When I would be-seem my knee, the brace would cavort it before I could graduate too far. The brace was black foam, because it graduates with everything. Crashed in black plastic with shiny metal dials on either side of my knee with six Velcro straps. Those were where the doctor adored my movement. Feelings on Project 2

The hardest part about project 2 has been deciding what type of writing to do. I finally decided on using a poem. I wanted to incorporate images that portrayed the different lines of the poem. It was hard trying to find and decide upon what images and where but I think I have it narrowed down after a few edits and trims. I like the way the images tie into one another but are still different in there own way. I am still trying to sync up the audio with the images and I have it almost right. I decided to speak the poem and use the words as the audio but I am also thinking about perhaps putting in some background noise behind the text.

Response 4



I chose the poem Explosion At Winco No.9 because it is a poem with alot of emotion in it. There are pauses that when read aloud and change the effect of the voice and time. The poem through the eyes of a coal camp widow, can be read with strength and with weakness at different points. I heard the author,Diana Gilliam Fisher,read this poem and after hearing her read it the poem took on a whole new feel to me.
The music I chose to play in the background was to emphasize the overall feeling of the poem. The song Wayfaring Stranger by Butch Baldassari and David Schnaufer is a dulcimer and mandolin piece that would be played in a coal camp of that period. I wanted to pauses in the voice and pitches in the music to work together to compose the overall feeling of the piece.

Ideas on 2nd project

I have not decided what poem or narrative I will write or use. I plan on using a sequence of pictures over using video but I have not completely ruled out video. I want the sound that will accompany the pictures and narrative to have an emphasis, to make the viewer better understand or get a real feeling from that moment in the sequence. Im not sure if the projects writing or sound has to have rhythym or repition or if it can be just a normal sound or flow. I think playing with audacity and windows movie maker might help fuel some ideas and give me a better understanding of the media we will be using.

Response Three

McCloud shows the different ways that cartoons show the elapse of time. This is done with frame size or text in most cases but in the case of Zombie and Mummy the creator uses how the viewer scrolls the screen to break the time frames into sequence. I think that it is a more modern and perhaps better way for the viewer to understand the concept of time changing and scene change. The viewer cannot see the previous frame when reading the current scene and that gives not only a implied time lapse but a more physical idea of time. The scrolling also aides in the sequence that the cartoon flows. Rather than having multiple scenes on one page and having the viewer follow the scene in hopefully the right order, the viewer has no choice but to read in the order that the cartoons appear on the page. Idea of sequential writing does not always mean that the story must follow a single plot line. With Carl Stories the viewer can create many different story lines to end up with the end of the story. Choosing the longest or shortest path to the end. This is breaking apart the idea of the cartoon story following frame after frame till the end. Geniwaite uses this idea in a way with The Night of Melvin’s Murder. With the link associated with the characters name and phrases. If the reader chose to click the link not in the order of the text but instead in a random fashion they would be reading a different story altogether. By choosing which one to click and when, as the reader clicks the links they find out pieces of the story in different orders, so each reader will get the story in a totally different way. Both time frame and sequence can change the way a viewer understands and perceives a story.

I learned in this project that it is not just about what we read but how we read it. You must break down the art of reading and see all the different responses our body has. The combination of imagery with writing forces the body to break the page apart into image and word. When you can combine the two, you will have a greater impact on the body.
I wanted to achieve with this project a sense of movement with the text. I wanted the implied movement from the image to reflect the movement as the text appears. Imagine the text as a fly line in motion through the air. As each section appears that is a stage of casting the line. This continues until the line lands softly on the waters surface.
The colors I chose for the text are meant to represent the colors of the rivers and of the fish. I hoped that they would reflect those colors from the image and also give a perceived idea of the colors found on a rainbow trout.
A big part of inspiration came from the Cummings poem; “r-p-o-p-h-e-s-s-a-g-r” my text is not reversed or jumbled it has movement, which may make the piece harder to follow. In Cummings’s poem, the movement of the text seems to me like it could imply a leap from the grasshopper.
The kinesthetic involved in viewing my project is the use of inner sight and inner speech. The viewer will first see the image and start to imagine a dialogue that would accompany it. Then as the text appears, the viewer will be reading the text while trying to connect it with the image in the background.
I got the quote for my project from FlyFishingJoy.com. Charles Kuralt wrote the quote and I took the photograph. I thought that the image included some of the key points of the quote. I hope that the viewer will be able to understand the link between the text and the image.

Project One Ideas

For my first project I have tossed around ideas about maybe doing a concrete poem or write a poem and have images that follow the poem. I think I am leaning more towards writing a poem and having related images compliment each line of the poem. This way the reader is following the poem not only through words but also images like a story board. I will use a poem that has alot of imagery in the writing. I have also thought about adding video in place of some of the images that will accompany the poem. Hopefully that will add a more interactive element to the project. The vibrant colors of the images should add depth to the piece and give emphasis to the writing. Using the right images will be just as important as the writing itself for it to be a successful piece.

Response to Young Essay

In his essay, Young points out many different types of notation. Different cultures approach reading with different tactics. The types of notation that I found most interesting where mnemonic, deviation from standard orthography, and writings as part of the landscape.
Today you can see Mnemonic reading practices in use. Mainly used by students as an easy way to remember important verses or categories. The difference between now and then is that it is a choice for a student to use this practice, not the only way of learning. Using this technique helps people who need visual keys to help cement ideas in their mind. With this form of notation, the reader is playing the sequences out in their mind as they are reading or viewing the images. That is an example of inner kinesthesia using inner sight and inner speech. When viewing an image, and if the mnemonic practice was successful, the reader should be able to say the verse or story in their head. When reading the image should be following the words like a storyboard.
The deviation of writers from standard orthography, though more prevalent in the past, can still be found in forms of literature today. Some poets still use this practice, perhaps as homage to past poets. However, genres of literature, such as Appalachian literature, have there own form of orthography. Appalachian writers use slang forms of words so the reader can feel as though they are not only reading the story, but are also part of the scene. Saying “allays” instead of “always” or “git” instead of “get” are just a few ways these authors use non-standard orthography. The reader may mentally break the words apart to recognize the connotation, but in doing so, they are using inner speech or inner kinesthesia. In the piece, the writers used different orthography to separate themselves from the mainstream writing.
Both etched into the surface and painted the practice of writing on large materials demands attention. The size of the writing may range from large to small but that size did not determine the impact of the content. Etching the writing into the surface makes it possible for the reader to reproduce the writing and take it with them. Today you can still see people doing this on etched surfaces such as the Vietnam Memorial. It may only be a single name copied and not a proverb, but to the reader it may carry the same importance. With this notation, both inner and outer sight is used. The act of taking in the reading from the surface and engraining it to memory.

My online autobiography

I would have to say I am a digital native. From the time I could walk I can remember there always being a computer or two in our house. My father worked for a company that repaired computers so we always had one there and pieces of ones that he would be working on himself. I can remember playing early versions of leap frog programs for learning vocabulary and math and playing mother goose video games. Even though I grew up around computers I can say that I really understand how they work. I was a sophomore in high school before I ever really used the internet. We had AOL of course, I think everyone did at first. Getting my first instant message from a friend online while talking to another friend on the phone at the same time seemed like the coolest thing ever. It was not till after we stopped using the demon AOL that I really learned how to explore the web. I used yahoo for email and did not have to hear the most annoying, " you've got mail " guy. I can see the little letter in my mailbox, I know I have mail shut up! Even today I still don't completely know everything about the internet and how it is magically placed in front of my everyday but I have learned to respect it because when you can't get online, the world seems to stop.
